In SteamWorld Dig, Rusty collects Ores and Gems to sell so he can buy Upgrades and Items. They are the main source of income for the people of Tumbleton. Ores are common, while gems are rarer. They appear in the caves. Some ores are impossible to harvest without the Jet Engine or Hook Shot.

- Mario coin is exclusive ore, available in the Wii U and Switch versions of the game. It can be found in the Mario easter egg area, in the first upgrade cave of the Old World.
- Unobtanium might be a reference to a highly expensive ore mined on the planet Pandora by the RDA in James Cameron's Avatar. Unobtainium is also a technical term used by engineers to describe a material that is perfectly suited for their needs but is otherwise currently unknown or unaffordable.
