Punch Cards are the turn-based combat mechanics for SteamWorld Quest battles.

Usage

Battles in SteamWorld Quest are fought using cards. Each hero you use in battle has their own deck of eight. These hero decks are shuffled together at the start of a battle and be dealt up to six cards each turn. From this, you can choose up to three to play each turn. After all cards on both sides have been played, the used cards will be discard and a new turn begins.

Any unused cards you had in your hand during the previous turn will remain, and you’ll draw from the deck to fill your hand of six. You redraw twice each turn as well or choose another card. Depending on the amount of turns, if is possible for your deck to be depleted. If so, any previously used cards that were discarded will be reshuffled to form a new deck. Battles are fought in this format until the opponent or all your heroes are scrapped (lose all HP).

Card Type

There are four types of cards used in battles:

  • Strike (Basic Attacks that deal damage to enemies)
  • Upgrade (Enhance Skills that buffs allies or debuff foes)
  • Skills (Powerful Skill that combines Strikes and Upgrades cards, but cost Steam Pressures)
  • Chain (Unique Skills that automatically activate using 3 cards of the same hero in a row. Can be changed when equipped with different weapons)

You can gain Steam Pressures (SP) by using Strikes and Upgrades cards. But some cards can be played together with another hero to boost their effects called Tag Team Combo. See description for more details.
